RESOLUTION NO. 970282

 

Commending Larry Gonnello, Sr. for his efforts to save lives through early notification of severe weather warnings.

 

WHEREAS, a dissemination system, known as the Emergency Managers Weather Information Network, or EMWIN, allows public safety officials to receive urgent weather warnings and routine forecasts within seconds of issuance by the local Weather Service Office; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City, Missouri became one of only a few cities in the country to offer a tremendous public service to local emergency managers. The Kansas City Fire Department, in cooperation with the Mid-America Council and others, began rebroadcasting National Weather Service forecasts and severe weather warnings via VHF radio across much of eastern Kansas and western Missouri; and

 

WHEREAS, the project was the vision of Mr. Larry Gonnello, Sr., a dispatcher with the Kansas City Fire Department. Through his efforts, potentially life-saving weather information reaches local decision makers quickly and efficiently; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby commend Larry Gonnello, Sr., for his efforts to establish the Emergency Managers Weather Information Network which helps life-saving weather information reach local decision-makers quickly and efficiently; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Larry Gonnello, Sr. in token of the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for the Emergency Managers Weather Information Network and its benefit for the citizens of Kansas City.
