RESOLUTION NO. 971012

Declaring July 17, 1997, as AFA Day.

WHEREAS, the AFA (Agriculture Future of America) was founded to ensure that youth from rural communities have the resources to capitalize on their potential. Today's youth are tomorrow's future leaders in agriculture, industry and all walks of life; and

WHEREAS, in the early Autumn of 1996 by R. Crosby Kemper, Jr., the AFA will be guided by a board of directors from the seven-state area of Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Iowa. The organization will be headed by a chief executive officer who has demonstrated leadership in the agricultural, youth development and corporate sectors. The AFA will be headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri; and

WHEREAS, today, less than 2 percent of the U.S. population is engaged in farming and ranching. Yet, this 2 percent is able to produce enough food to feed 12 percent of the entire world's population. For most people in the United States, food is low-priced and in abundant supply; and

WHEREAS, the initial focus of the AFA will be the funding and awarding of college scholarships and summer internships to the Midwest's top high-school students who wish to pursue their agriculture education in the region's universities and agricultural schools; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare July 17, 1997, as AFA Day; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to Angela Watts, AFA Student Intern with John Deere, Ryan Hutson, AFA Student Intern with Farmland, and Ben Morris, AFA Student Intern with the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, in appreciation of the dedication and support of today's youth as tomorrow's leaders in our agriculture industry.
