RESOLUTION NO. 130181

 

Congratulating the North Kansas City School District on its Centennial.

WHEREAS, the North Kansas City School District No. 74 was founded March 14, 1913, through the consolidation of Harlem School District No. 72 and Glenwood School District No. 73; and

 

WHEREAS, from a first-year enrollment of 32 students, the district has grown, absorbing 14 annexations from 1915-1963 to form the approximate 82 square miles the district now encompasses with its 21 elementary, 5 middle and 4 high schools; and

 

WHEREAS, with approximately 19,000 students, North Kansas City Schools is the sixth largest school district in the state and the largest on the Missouri side of the Kansas City metropolitan area and serves families living in the neighborhoods and municipalities of southern Clay County from Staley High School on the far northern border to Briarcliff Elementary School on the south; and

 

WHEREAS, the district’s first high school, North Kansas City High School, opened in January 1926 and was nearly 40 years before Oak Park was added in 1965, becoming the first “climate-controlled” or air-conditioned high school in the metropolitan area with Winnetonka High School following in March 1971, and Staley opening in August 2008; and

 

WHEREAS, the North Kansas City Schools are nationally accredited and fully accredited by the State of Missouri with the district offering academically rigorous learning for students in kindergarten through high school, including the Northland’s only prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma and also providing optional pre-K classes, before- and after-school programs, expansive gifted and honors opportunities, career and professional academies, A+ certified high schools, and adult and community education programs for learns of all ages; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate the North Kansas City School District on its Centennial; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Joe Jacobs, President of the Board of Education and Dr. Todd White, Superintendent of Schools, with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for the excellent job being done to teach our young people in the community.
