RESOLUTION NO. 990658

 

Expressing the intent of the City Council to locate and maintain a general aviation airport in the Richards-Gebaur - South Kansas City area and directing the City Manager to take all necessary steps to implement the Councils intent pursuant to an open and public process.

 

WHEREAS, on June 24, 1997, the City Council approved a resolution directing the City Manager to determine the requirements for potential closure of Richards-Gebaur Memorial Airport for subsequent use as an intermodal freight distribution center; and

 

WHEREAS, the City Council approved a Memorandum of Agreement dated July 14, 1998, with the Federal Aviation Administration setting forth the terms and conditions of closure of Richards-Gebaur Memorial Airport; and

 

WHEREAS, on February 22, 1999, the City Council approved a 50 year Lease Agreement with the Port Authority of Kansas City for development of an intermodal freight distribution center by Kansas City Southern Railway Company; and

 

WHEREAS, the City Council is cognizant of community support for a general aviation facility in South Kansas City; and

 

WHEREAS, it is the intent of the City Council to maintain a general aviation facility in the Richards-Gebaur - South Kansas City area and also to promote the economic development of the Richards-Gebaur Memorial Airport and promote the intermodal freight project; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

Section 1. That it is the intent of the City Council that a general aviation facility shall continue in the Richards-Gebaur - South Kansas City area and the City Manager is hereby directed to take all necessary steps to facilitate the location and maintenance of such airport.

 

Section 2. That the process for locating and maintaining the general aviation airport and any adjacent industrial development shall be open to the public and shall include public input and comment.
