RESOLUTION NO. 050911, AS AMENDED
That the Council of the City of
Kansas City, Missouri supports its Congressional delegations efforts to
protect the promise to Missourians, and oppose restructuring the Social
Security Trust Fund in ways that reduces guaranteed benefits for hundreds of thousands
of Missourians, especially women and children who will be disproportionately
affected and who depend upon Social Security for their survival and well-being.
1,033,000 Missourians of all ages are dependent upon guaranteed Social Security
Security protects not only retirees, but also almost 185,000 disabled workers
and their families, and almost 90,000 children; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED
BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
Section 1. That
the Council of the City of Kansas City, Missouri urges attention to the unique
features of the current Social Security system:
Protection from market fluctuations;
Lifelong protection in case of disability, death of a spouse or
parent, and insufficient retirement income; and
Progressive benefits linked to earnings that cannot lose value
over the recipients lifetime.
Urging the Missouri Congressional delegation to protect Missourians by keeping
the governments promise to all Americans that after many years of hard work
their Social Security benefits will be there at retirement; that the Congress
carefully examine establishment of private accounts or other dramatic changes
in the Social Security system; and directing the City Clerk to distribute
copies of this resolution to President Bush, the Missouri Congressional
delegation, and Governor Matt Blunt.
Section 3. That
the City Clerk will provide a copy of this resolution to President George W.
Bush, the members of the Missouri Congressional delegation, and Governor Matt
