RESOLUTION NO. 140697

Declaring August 28 – September 6, 2014, as Kansas City WATER WEEK in Kansas City, Missouri.

WHEREAS, this year marks the 24th annual World Water Week, an annual convening focused on water and development issues that is organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute that attracts thousands of people, hundreds of organizations and policy makers, and raises awareness of the global water crisis; and

WHEREAS, nearly 750 million globally live without access to safe water and nearly 2.5 billion globally live without access to improved sanitation; and

WHEREAS, nearly 180 million hours each day are spent collecting water and $260 billion is lost globally each year due to lack of adequate water supply and sanitation; and

WHEREAS, every 51 seconds a child dies from preventable water and sanitation-related diarrhea; and

WHEREAS, Water.org, a Kansas City-based non-profit organization, is working to provide access to safe water and sanitation for all—giving women hope, children health and communities a future; and

WHEREAS, Mount Veritas, a group of Kansas City-based bands, will perform a benefit concert, Water is Food, on September 6, 2014, to raise awareness about the water crisis and food access issues and raise funds for Water.org and Cultivate KC, two Kansas City-based non-profit organizations; and

WHEREAS, the 2014 Kansas City WATER WEEK and Water is Food event demonstrate the compassion and caring of people of all ages, from all backgrounds and walks of life who come together to participate in this event; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare August 28 – September 6, 2014, as Kansas City WATER WEEK in Kansas City, Missouri; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Water.org with the urging of the Mayor and Council for every Kansas Citian to participate in this celebration of global community spirit, awareness, and festivities and join those around the world to make a difference.
