RESOLUTION NO. 190109

Declaring the month of February 2019 to be American Heart Month, supporting Go Red for Women and recognizing the work of the American Heart Association.

WHEREAS, heart disease and stroke cause a third of all deaths among American women, more than all cancers combined; and

WHEREAS, since 1924, the American Heart Association has invested in research that has resulted in significant improvements in the research, treatment, and raising public awareness of heart disease, thus there has been a 70 percent reduction in the mortality rate by cardiovascular disease since 1968; and

WHEREAS, the American Heart Association has invested more than 4.1 billion dollars into heart disease and stroke research, more than any other organization besides the federal government; and

WHEREAS, Go Red for Women increases the public’s awareness about heart disease in women and the importance of recognizing the symptoms of a heart attack or stroke and the need for funding for research and better treatments; and

WHEREAS, Knowing Your Numbers is a preventative measure for women to take control of their heart health such as knowing their Total Cholesterol, HDL (good) Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI). Knowing these numbers can help women and their healthcare provider determine their risk for developing cardiovascular diseases; and

WHEREAS, on February 7, 2019, the City Council will stand in support of those living with heart disease and those at risk by wearing red to Go Red for Women. In addition, we salute the women and men who dedicate themselves to the prevention and treatment of heart disease; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare the month of February 2019 to be "American Heart Month" in Kansas City, Missouri; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the American Heart Association with the Mayor and Council encouraging all citizens of Kansas City to participate in Go Red for Women this month of February 2019 and continue to increase the awareness by speaking up about heart disease, and empowering women to reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease.
