RESOLUTION NO. 130887

Commending Consensus on selecting Alvin Brooks, Steve Roling, Airick Leonard West and Corinna West to receive Consensus Civility Awards.

WHEREAS, Consensus is embarking on its second year of recognizing Kansas City citizens who have perfected the ability to respect others while searching for common ground in the face of differences; and

WHEREAS, on November 14th, the Consensus Civility Awards breakfast will be held to honor Alvin Brooks, President of the Ad Hoc Group Against Crime; Steve Roling, recently retired CEO of the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City; Airick Leonard West, President of the Kansas City, Missouri School Board; and Corinna West, mental health activist, poet and social entrepreneur, who have worked across differences to solve problems; and

WHEREAS, since its inception, Consensus has provided a proven consensus building process to utilize and safe, neutral space where people can come together to deal with difficult issues including minority business development, neighborhood safety, solid waste management, urban redevelopment and child care, with its current efforts focusing on mental health as part of the national dialogue on this important topic; and

WHEREAS, in 2009, the Civility Project was launched after town hall meetings on health-care reform appeared to drive people further apart instead of bringing them closer together; and

WHEREAS, Consensus may be best known for its study of regional funding for cultural and recreational amenities which led to passage of the bi-state tax that was used to finance renovation of Union Station, and its most recent study on the structure and funding of libraries has received national attention; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby commend Consensus on selecting Alvin Brooks, Steve Roling, Airick Leonard West and Corinna West to receive Consensus Civility Awards and also commend the distinguished honorees for their service to the community; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to each of the award recipients as well as to Consensus with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for the outstanding services they are providing to our community.
