RESOLUTION NO. 060626

 

Recognizing and commemorating the 185th anniversary of the birth of Reverend Nathan Scarritt and the reunion of descendants of this illustrious pioneer and community leader.

 

WHEREAS, the Reverend Nathan Scarritt arrived in the area of what is now known as Kansas City more than 157 years ago and began a long and illustrious career as a Methodist minister, missionary and teacher of Native Americans and early settlers, an early trader in the Town of Westport, and organizer and first principal of Westport High School, a founder of numerous colleges including Central College in Fayette, Missouri, of which he was the first president, and Scarritt Bible and Training School, later Scarritt College in Nashville, Tennessee, a founder of Melrose Methodist Church, and owner and developer of land in what is now the central business district and Crown Center, and one of Kansas Citys earliest and prominent leaders; and

 

WHEREAS, the marriage of Reverend Nathan Scarritt and Martha Matilda Chick, daughter of Colonel William Miles Chick, the first postmaster in Kansas City, produced nine children and established the Kansas City Scarritt family; and

 

WHEREAS, the descendants of Reverend Nathan Scarritt will gather in Kansas City on June 16-18, 2006, to honor the 185th anniversary of the birth of Reverend Scarritt and to celebrate their legacy; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize and commemorate the 185th anniversary of the birth of Reverend Nathan Scarritt, and the reunion of descendants of this illustrious pioneer and community leader; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof, and that copies hereof be presented to Richard Scarritt, Ann Ready, Russell Jones, and Will Royster in celebration of the Scarritt familys legacy and reunion.
