RESOLUTION NO. 990737

 

Declaring May, 1999, as First Older American Month in Kansas City, Missouri.

 

WHEREAS, early in the 1960's census data revealed that the nations population was graying more rapidly than expected raising many questions regarding the quality of life both for the seniors and their children; and

 

WHEREAS, major areas of concern were determined and a means for addressing them were acted upon by the United States Congress resulting in the enactment of the Older Americans Act of 1965; and

WHEREAS, the policy objectives of the Older Americans Act are to improve the lives of older Americans age 60 and older; and

 

WHEREAS, Missouri ranks fifth among the states having a senior population ratio of 14% or more and the current senior population of 240,000 in the Kansas City metropolitan area will double by the year 2030; and

 

WHEREAS, it is evident that the senior population of Kansas City affords a valuable human resource that is contributing to the continuing advancements of Kansas City in enumerable ways; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare May, 1999, to be Older Kansas Citians Month, marking the anniversary of the enactment of the Older Americans Act of 1965; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Reverend Edward E. Fields with the wishes of the Mayor and Council that all Kansas Citians will recognize their seniors and their unique contributions.
