RESOLUTION NO. 961116

 

Honoring the 1996 Elder Statesmen of Kansas City Jazz Inductees and celebrating the 92nd Birthday of the Mutual Musicians Foundation.

 

WHEREAS, keeping in the tradition of Jazz and Heritage Month and in conjunction with this year's 18th & Vine Heritage Jazz Festival, the 92nd birthday of the Mutual Musicians Foundation, and Elder Statesmen of Kansas City Jazz Annual Induction Ceremony will be held Saturday, August 24, 1996, at the Mutual Musicians Foundation at 1823 Highland, where the festivities will begin at 2:30 p.m. - in the heart of the 18th & Vine Historic District. This year's Induction Ceremony will honor nine men and a woman who are over the age of 60 or performed professionally for thirty years. The 1996 Inductees are: Edwin "Ed" Billings, Leon Estell, Sylvester "Buzz" Kirschner, Donald Parsons, Myra Taylor, Donald "Big Don" Cox, William "Billy" Freeman, Richard "Sarge" Myers, James "Jim" Smith and Lawrence Wright; and

 

WHEREAS, after the Induction Ceremony on Saturday, August 24, 1996, the Mutual Musicians Foundation will continue celebrating - 92 years as The Home of Kansas City Jazz. Live music will continue throughout the Festival weekend - featuring some of the best in the area, regional and national talent. The famous Late Night Jam Session is a must attend during the Festival weekend and every weekend on Friday and Saturday nights; and

 

WHEREAS, in its 92 years, MMF has developed the reputation of receiving internationally known scholars of music as members, creating notable legends and fostering the development of a style and sound uniquely recognized. The Foundation building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and a designated local historic site by the Kansas City, Missouri Landmarks Commission; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate the 1996 Elder Statesmen of Kansas City Jazz Inductees and recognize the 92nd Birthday of the Mutual Musicians Foundation; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Edwin "Ed" Billings, Leon Estell, Sylvester "Buzz" Kirschner, Donald Parsons, Myra Taylor, Donald "Big Don" Cox, William "Billy" Freeman, Richard "Sarge" Myers, James "Jim" Smith and Lawrence Wright in recognition of their contributions to jazz and entertainment in Kansas City and around the world.
