Congratulating Alvin
Brooks on his 80th birthday.
WHEREAS,
Alvin Brooks grew up in the Leeds Dunbar section of Kansas City, Missouri;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Brooks attended Dunbar Elementary School and went on to R.T. Coles
Vocational School where he met Carol Rich and they were married in
1950 and had 6 children together; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Brooks began his career with the Kansas City, Missouri Police
Department in June 1954; and
WHEREAS, in 1968, Mr. Brooks was named Director of Kansas City’s
Human Relations Department, the first African-American to be appointed
head of any City department, was promoted to Assistant City Manager
in 1972; and
WHEREAS,
in 1977, in the wake of several unsolved murders, Mr. Brooks convened a
group of concerned citizens and the AdHoc Group Against Crime was born;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Brooks was elected to the Kansas City Missouri City Council in
1999 and re-elected in 2003; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Brooks has a Missouri Lifetime Teacher’s Certificate and was
awarded the Alumni of the Year Award from UMKC; and
WHEREAS,
on May 4, 2012 Mr. Brooks will be honored with a Doctor of Philosophy Degree by
the UMKC College of Arts and Sciences; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS
CITY:
That
the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate Alvin Brooks on his 80th birthday;
and
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the
Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Alvin
Brooks with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City
for his many years of dedicated service to this community.
