RESOLUTION NO. 010140

Recognizing the South Kansas City Chamber of Commerce for 70 years of service to the community.

 

WHEREAS, the South Kansas City Chamber of Commerce originated in 1931 to service the area from 75th Street to the south city limits; and

 

WHEREAS, the South Kansas City Chamber of Commerce is comprised of several hundred members which include many small businesses as well as major corporate employers in the southland whose goal is uplifting the community in South Kansas City; and

 

WHEREAS, the South Kansas City Chamber of Commerce continues to make an impact today. Efforts in 2001 center on economic development activities including co-sponsoring with the Economic Development Corporation in the establishment of a Community Improvement District at the Bannister Corridor, improvements to the intersections at I-435 and State Line, Wornall and Holmes Roads, involvement with the neighborhood planning and development groups, Center Planning & Development Council and Southern Communities Coalition, participating in the Planning Action Committee land use study of the Richards-Gebaur property (1100 acres to be developed), scheduling monthly membership meetings (breakfast and luncheon forums) where speakers include experts in the issues important to Chamber members; and sponsoring the Leadership South Kansas City program each spring, which takes 20 participants through an extensive evaluation of issues, and organizations that are impacting the Southland and identifies potential leadership for future community efforts; and

 

WHEREAS, the membership has identified education as the most important component in the formula to achieving Quality Communities and South Kansas City Chamber of Commerce pledges to work closely with the southland school districts: Center, Hickman Mills and Grandview, as well as the Kansas City, Missouri district; NOW, THEREFORE

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate the South Kansas City Chamber of Commerce for 70 years of service to the community; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the South Kansas City Chamber of Commerce in recognition of their dedication and support which helped improve and sustain the quality of life in the community.
