RESOLUTION NO. 030927

 

In memory of Reverend Everett Thornton, who passed away August 11, 2003.

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Everett Thornton, passed away on August 11, 2003; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1973, Reverend Thornton founded Dismas House which is a faith-based residential treatment center that shelters and cares for men and women who are making the transition from jail or prison back into the community; and

 

WHEREAS, in over 30 years of existence, thousands of men and women passed through the doors of Dismas House where they were treated with love and respect. They were given the opportunity to become an asset to the community instead of a liability; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Thornton served as Executive Director of Dismas House until a few months ago before handing the reins over to Reverend Ladell Flowers, his long time assistant; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Thornton did the gospel circuit before settling in Kansas City in 1956. He also established the Grace Temple, a nondenominational church where hhhe conducted Wednesday evening services and preached on Sundays; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Thornton counseled residents at the Western Missouri Mental Health Center and at the Jackson County Jail for several years before asking the Jackson County Circuit Court for custody of eight of their most hardened criminals and getting the funds loaned to him by the late banker/philanthropist John J. Sullivan, Jr., he established Dismas House; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Thornton was a great man who loved God and people and will be sorely missed in the community; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby express their sorrow on the death of Reverend Everett Thornton; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the family of Reverend Evert Thornton in token of the genuine esteem and respect in which he was held, and in token of the sincere sympathy hereby extended to the bereaved.
