RESOLUTION NO. 130246, AS AMENDED

Calling on the President and Congress of the United States to recognize the national budget’s impact on our local communities, to protect the safety network, to fund domestic priorities such as job creation and to create a fairer tax system to pay for it; and directing the City Clerk to send this Resolution to our Congressional Representatives.

WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Council urge President Obama and Congress to evaluate national budget issues in a way that considers its impact on our local communities; and

WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Council recognize that current House budget proposals in Washington, D.C. undermine the health and well-being of our community; and

WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Council call upon Congress and the President to:

·         create and protect jobs by investing in manufacturing, schools, housing, renewable energy, transportation and other public services;

·         eliminate cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans benefits and housing, food and unemployment assistance;

·         provide new revenues for  these purposes and reduce the long-term federal deficit by closing corporate tax loopholes, ending offshore tax havens, and raising taxes on incomes over $250,000.00 so that all pay their fair share; and

·         provide adequate funding for these high priority domestic needs through a balanced approach of increasing revenue and reducing funding for military and lower priority domestic programs;

NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

Section 1. That the Mayor and Council of Kansas City, Missouri understand the national budget’s impact on our community and support federal legislation and executive action that protects the safety network, funds domestic priorities such as job creation and creates a fairer tax system to pay for it.

Section 2. That the City Clerk shall provide copies of this Resolution to Senator Claire McCaskill, Senator Roy Blunt, Congressman Sam Graves and Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II.
