RESOLUTION NO. 130185

Congratulating the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City on its Advocacy for the Uninsured and Underinsured of Our Community.

WHEREAS, the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City is dedicated to their mission of providing leadership, advocacy, and resources to eliminate barriers and promote quality health for uninsured and underserved in our community; and

WHEREAS, HCF makes grants available to health and social service nonprofits in the metropolitan area and serves as a funding source for area safety net organizations that promote healthy lifestyles, mental health and safety net health care; and

WHEREAS, Mental Health First Aid is a program designed to reduce the stigma toward people with mental illness and to train the general public to recognize the signs of mental illness and respond appropriately.  Seven area community mental health care centers have received a $75,000.00 grant from the HCF to train 23 people to teach Mental Health First Aid with their goal being to give the two-day course to as many as 1400 people this year; and

WHEREAS, HCF has acted as a watch dog on funds that were to be spent by the Health Corporation of America (HCA) for charitable health care resulting from the transferring of the not for profit Health Midwest Hospitals to the for profit HCA and recently won a $162 million lawsuit that is on appeal; and

WHEREAS, the decision was “a huge victory for the uninsured and the underinsured of Kansas City – about 900,000 people, according to the Mid-America Regional Council,” said Michael Blumenthal, one of the Foundation attorneys; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City on its Advocacy for the Uninsured and Underinsured of Our Community; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Steve Roling, Health Care Foundation president, Karen Cox, Health Care Foundation Chairwoman and

Harry Jonas with the best wishes of the Mayor and Council for their continued success in bringing health to the indigent of our community.
