RESOLUTION NO. 160397

 

Recognizing Northland Center for Advanced Professional Studies for their significant impact on today’s youth to help provide economic development in the Northland.

 

WHEREAS, the Northland Center for Advanced Professional Studies (NCAPS) started in August 2013; and

 

WHEREAS, NCAPS is a professionbased learning approach where students are fully immersed in the business community, treated as professionals and participate in real projects, using industry-standard tools with real business partners and engaging in curriculum developed by industry professionals and program instructors, ensuring that what is taught in the classroom is relevant to the workforce; and

 

WHEREAS, NCAPS students will gain professional skills in high demand/high skill careers, e.g. engineering, computer software engineering, advanced manufacturing, nursing, physicians, marketing, banking, etc., and will begin their professional network with business partners and mentors, therefore, jumpstarting their career all before they enter college; and

 

WHEREAS, NCAPS success in student enrollment has made a substantial increase by an average of 109+ students per year from 28 students in 2013-14 to 356 students in 2016-2017; and

 

WHEREAS, NCAPS began the program with two strands and has expanded to six including Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing, Global Business and Entrepreneurship, Global Logistics and Transportation, Medicine and Healthcare, and Technology Solutions and Technology Solutions - Designs; and

 

WHEREAS, NCAPS has grown from 4 businesses and now works with over 400 businesses and began with 11 high schools in 6 districts and are now reaching 14 high schools in 7 districts in the Northland; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize Northland Center for Advanced Professional Studies for their significant impact on today’s youth to help provide economic development in the Northland; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Sandra Henshaw, Executive Director of the Northland Center for Advanced Professional Studies, in token of the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for many years of dedicated service and their best wishes for all the years to come.
