RESOLUTION NO. 910042

 

Honoring Jefferson Farris upon his retirement as Executive Director of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

WHEREAS, Jefferson Farris announced his retirement as Executive Director of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics on December 31, 1990; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Farris became the Association's fourth Executive Director in December 1986, bringing with him perspectives reflecting a long-time involvement in collegiate athletics as a player, coach, faculty athletics representative, athletic administrator, and college president; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Farris cited as the hallmark of his tenure with the NAIA the passage of legislation in 1988 which established more stringent entrance requirements for athletes as well as higher standards for continued eligibility; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Farris has also helped develop corporate funding for the NAIA national championship events, including the annual basketball tournament in March, 1989 at Kemper Arena and improved involvement of athletic directors and faculty representatives; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Farris, a native of Conway, Arkansas, had a long association with the University of Central Arkansas, as a student, as chairman of a department, and as dean of the college of fine and applied arts, and was promoted to the presidency of the University in 1975, a position he held until accepting the position as Executive Director of the NAIA; and

 

WHEREAS, the Mayor and Council honor Mr. Farris for his successful years of service to the NAIA; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council recognize Mr. Jefferson Farris for his outstanding leadership of the NAIA over the past four years; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council and a copy be furnished to Jefferson Farris in token of the Council's appreciation for his fine work in our community.
