RESOLUTION NO. 190890

Declaring Tuesday, October 29 as “Buckle Up, Phone Down” day in Kansas City, Missouri, in conjunction with the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety and the City’s Corporate Safety & Risk Management Division.

WHEREAS, the Missouri Department of Transportation and the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety are challenging you and those you know at home, work, school, and community to buckle up and put your phone down; and

WHEREAS, the challenge is: when you get into any vehicle, buckle up your safety belt. If you are a driver, put the cellphone down. Focus on driving safely by not using your phone to make phone calls or texting. You may have to turn it off to limit distractions; and

WHEREAS, in 2017, Missouri had 937 drivers and passengers killed in vehicular crashes, in 2018, 6 out of 10 vehicle occupants killed in Missouri traffic crashes were unbuckled, and over the last four years, crashes involving cell phones have increased by 35 percent; and

WHEREAS, all week long employees and safety partners will be making efforts to reach out to businesses and individuals alike. By buckling up and putting your phone down – even for one day – you will be doing your part to make Missouri’s roads safer. Let’s save lives and turn this day into a week, a month, and eventually every time; and

WHEREAS, the simple task of buckling everyone in the vehicle and choosing not to use your phone while driving can help save your life, the lives of your passengers, and occupants of other vehicles; and

WHEREAS, it’s time to join the movement and stand up and be counted. Take the challenge at http://www.modot.org/BuckleUpPhoneDown/. ARRIVE ALIVE!; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare, October 29, 2019, as “Buckle Up, Phone Down” day in Kansas City and urges all citizens to take MODOT’s Buckle Up Phone Down pledge and learn more about the risks associated with cell phone use and not buckling up while driving; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to David Silvester, MODOT, and Kristin Danner, City of Kansas City, in token of the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for many years of service to our City and of their best wishes for all the years to come.
