RESOLUTION NO. 160468

 

Recognizing the City’s score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index, celebrating LGBT Pride month and honoring those who continue to work towards full equality in the face of many challenges.

 

WHEREAS, the Human Rights Campaign, founded in 1980, has become the largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2012 HRC announced the Municipal Equality Index (MEI) which is the first nationwide evaluation of municipal laws affecting the LGBT community and examines the laws, policies, and services of municipalities from every state in the country and rates them on the basis of their inclusivity of LGBT people who live and work in those cities; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City has a progressive history of inclusivity towards the LGBT population that includes both legislative and staff support, while continuing exploration and enaction polices that create an atmosphere of equality; and

 

WHEREAS, because of the many efforts of dedicated departments and their leaders, Kansas City was awarded a perfect 100 score on the 2015 Municipal Equality Index; and

 

WHEREAS, despite progress in the areas of civil rights, there remains the danger, both physical and legal, that threaten the progress and lives of LGBT folks; and

WHEREAS, each June the country celebrates LGBT Pride Month to honor the progress achieved by LGBT folks since the 1969 Stonewall Riots; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize the City’s score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index, celebrate LGBT Pride month and honor those who continue to work towards full equality in the face of many challenges; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the member of the staff that worked diligently to promote a welcoming environment recognized by the Human Rights Campaign.
