Expressing
sympathy on the death of G. Lawrence Blankinship.
WHEREAS, G.
Lawrence Blankinship died on December 28, 2005; and
WHEREAS, G.
Lawrence Blankinship was a pioneer in the beauty and barber supply industry
marketing products to African Americans; and
WHEREAS, G.
Lawrence Blankinship was born in Louisiana in 1913 and moved to Kansas City,
Missouri as a young teenager graduating from Lincoln High School; and
WHEREAS, G.
Lawrence Blankinship was a devoted member of the Paseo Baptist Church was well
as being a leader in many civic and community endeavors; and
WHEREAS, G.
Lawrence Blankinship was a City Councilman serving the 3rd District
of Kansas City, Missouri, and one of the organizers of Twin City Federal
Savings and Loan, the first black-owned and operated financial institution in
Kansas City, Missouri; and
WHEREAS, G.
Lawrence Blankinship received many awards during his lifetime and to
commemorate his legacy as an entrepreneur and community leader in the Historic
Vine District, in 2003, was honored with an honorary street sign naming Vine
Street from 19th to 21st Streets, G. L. Blankinship, Sr. Avenue, NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED
BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor
and Council hereby honor G. Lawrence Blankenship for his contributions to the
Kansas City area and that the Council take special note of his death on
December 28, 2005; and
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in
testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to his family in token of
the sadness felt by the Mayor and Council on this occasion.
