RESOLUTION NO. 090240

 

Congratulating Fred A. Curls on his 90th Birthday Celebration.

WHEREAS, Fred A Curls, joined by a multitude of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his daughter-in-law Melba Curls, extended family and friends, will have a 90th Birthday Celebration the weekend of March 2729, 2009, in Kansas City Missouri to honor a true living legend; and

 

WHEREAS, Fred A. Curls was born in Kansas City, Kansas, on March 31, 1919, is a descendant of Cherokee Freedmen, and was the only child of Eula Martin Curls of Nowata, Oklahoma and James Curls of Chelsea, Oklahoma; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Curls graduated from Lincoln High School where he became a part of the historic graduating Class of 1937, which was the first class to graduate from the new high school, known as The Castle on the Hill; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Curls launched his real estate career in 1952. His career quickly excelled, and he opened his own real estate firm, Curls & Associates, in 1954. Mr. Curls expanded his business to appraising and property development, and became the first licensed African-American appraiser in Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1959, Fred Curls, along with Leon Jordan, Bruce Watkins, Dr. Charles Moore and Howard Maupin founded Freedom, Incorporated one of the oldest and most active political organizations in the nation. Mr. Curls is its only surviving founder; and

 

WHEREAS, Fred A. Curls has ensured the continuation of his legacy through his family. He had 7 children who produced 22 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. This includes the most recent addition to the family, a great-grandson, who was born March 17, 2009; and

 

WHEREAS, at 90 years old, Fred Curls continues to go to the office most days to answer phones, welcome visitors, and play solitaire on his computer. He also regularly attends the Pioneers Club meeting on Wednesdays; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate Fred A. Curls on his 90th Birthday Celebration; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Fred A. Curls in token of the high esteem with which he is held by the Mayor and Council and with best wishes on many more birthdays.
