RESOLUTION NO. 100585

 

Directing the City Manager to submit a proposed budget and operational plan for continued assessment of the City’s compliance with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act and remediation.

 

WHEREAS, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities, on the basis of disability, in the programs, services and activities of local governments; and

 

WHEREAS, the Council desires that the City be in full compliance with the ADA as quickly as feasible; and

 

WHEREAS, the City Manager has already assembled and directed certain City staff to begin the process of assessing the City’s compliance with the requirements of the ADA; and

 

WHEREAS, the City has recently been notified that it has been selected to participate in the U.S. Department of Justice’s “Project Civic Access”, which is an initiative to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to participate in civic life; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

  Section 1. That the City Manager is hereby directed to submit to the Council, within sixty (60) days of the passage of this resolution, an operational plan for the continued assessment of the City’s compliance with the requirements of the ADA, its remediation of any noncompliance with ADA requirements and its participation in the upcoming “Project Civic Access” of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Section 2. This operational plan is to include a proposed budget for assessment and remediation that also identifies potential funding sources, a summary of City staff assigned, or to be assigned, along with a designation of each City staff person’s role or responsibilities and a timeline for the completion of the various assessment and remediation functions.
