RESOLUTION NO. 160483

 

Congratulating Ms. De Barker on her contribution to the community.

 

WHEREAS, Ms. De Barker was born and raised in Kansas City, MO graduating from Manual High School. Ms. Barker obtained a B.S. degree in Physical Science, Kinesiology from California State University-Fullerton and a B.S. degree in Computer Systems Technology from DeVry University-California; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Barker maintains a successful career as a database manager/technology support specialist and serves as chief choreographer and head instructor for dance groups locally and abroad. Ms. Barker is currently CEO and Chief Choreographer of Kansas City’s own DeUnyt performing choreographed routines throughout the community and across the US; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Barker then brought line dance and Kansas City Style 2-step classes to the Parks and Recreation KCMO community centers. Ms. Barker’s goal is to promote healthy lifestyles through dance and movement for people of all ages. Ms. Barker’s degree and certifications in Aerobic instruction allows her to teach dance and physical wellness. Ms. Barker’s schedule is filled with events focused on the betterment of our community including the Diabetes Expo, silver sneaker senior class, United Negro College Fund, and promoting 1st Fridays, Stepping on the Vine; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Barker has been recognized for contributions and involvement in the Kansas City community by The Call, KCUR, EQ Magazine, The Tom Joyner Morning Show, US Army, and the Mayor of Kansas City. While Ms. Barker has choreographed dances for well-known artists in the music industry, her passion remains for Kansas City. Ms. Barker has vowed to keep KC 2-Step alive and presented The 12th Annual; Big Step Off 2016, “Steppin’ And All That Jazz”, A Kansas City 2-Step Dance Competition with a $10,000.00 purse; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Barker is also devoted to her family and cultivates the same passion she has for community and the arts in her family; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate Ms. De Barker on her contributions to promoting healthier lifestyles through dance and movement; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Ms. De Barker with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for her many years of dedicated service to this community.
