RESOLUTION NO. 970405

 

Declaring Saturday, March 29, 1997 as "Kansas City Comets Day".

 

WHEREAS, during the 1980's, the Comets represented Kansas City as the only indoor soccer team playing in the Major Indoor Soccer League; and

 

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Attack now represent Kansas City as its only indoor soccer team. The Attack, replacing the Comets in 1991, have put Kansas City on the soccer map as champions of the National Professional Soccer League for the 1992-93 Season; and

 

WHEREAS, that the number TWO of Gino Schiraldi's jersey be retired. Gino, an original member of the Comets and all star soccer player, has become an integral part of Kansas City's community as founder of Gino Schiraldi's Pizza and a franchise owner of Lamar's donuts; and

 

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Attack as a tribute in recognition of the cultural diversity that soccer represents is playing the final game of the season as Sister City Night; and

 

WHEREAS, on the night of March 29, the Kansas City Attack will honor the players and coaches of the Comets for their contributions to Kansas City Soccer; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare March 29, 1997, as "Kansas City Comets Day" in Kansas City; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to Gino Schiraldi, Doug Greenwaldt, Marketing Director for the Kansas City Attack, Marilyn Weld, President of the Kansas City Sister City Association, and John Fierro, Chairman of the Guadalajara Sister City Commission in recognition of their contributions to Kansas City Soccer.
