RESOLUTION NO. 100619

 

Recognizing August 3, 2010, as National Night Out, "America's Night Out Against Crime".

 

WHEREAS, in 1984, the National Association of Town Watch, a non-profit, crime prevention organization, proposed a national program which would be coordinated by local crime prevention agencies and organizations; and

 

WHEREAS, the first year 400 communities in 23 states participated in National Night Out compared to the 2009 event which included over 36 million people in 14,625 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide; and

 

WHEREAS, National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug awareness, generate support for and encourage neighborhood residents to participate in local crime awareness/prevention initiatives, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnership, and send a message to criminals that Kansas City neighborhood residents and organizations are determined to end crime and violence in Kansas City’s center-city neighborhoods; and

 

WHEREAS, on August 3, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Parade Park at Paseo and Truman Road the National Night Out event will feature a March Against Crime and Rally, which will include drill teams, youth choirs, and dance groups; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize August 3, 2010, as National Night Out, "America's Night Out Against Crime"; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Francine Nelson, Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council, Jessie Jefferson, Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council, Leigh Blumentha, Blue Hills Community Services, Jerome Foster, Swope Community Builders, Janay Reliford, AdHoc, Lisa Moore, STOP (Save Tomorrow’s Outstanding People), Augusta Wilbon, Neighborhood Housing Services, Barry Mayer, Kansas City Crime Commission, Cathy Thomas Jackson, Black Economic Union, Betsy Phillips, United Way, Paul Demo, Venessa Huskey, City of KCMO Neighborhood Services, Officer James Shriever, KCPD, Officer Jason Cooley, KCPD, Officer Cindy Cotterman, KCPD, with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for the efforts being made to make Kansas City a safer place to live.
