RESOLUTION NO. 990169

 

Expressing the intent of the Council to establish a strategic alliance between Kansas City, Missouri and the North American International Trade Corridor Partnership and authorizing the City Manager to take all appropriate measures necessary for the implementation of the relationship.

 

WHEREAS, on April 3, 1997, representatives from more than one hundred communities, including 87 Mayors from Mexico, the United States and Canada, came together in Monterrey, Mexico at the First Summit of Mayors and signed an Agreement of Intention, establishing the foundation to work together on developing priorities, opportunities and strategies for the development of North-South trade; and

 

WHEREAS, the North American International Trade Corridor Partnership (NAITCP) is the formal organizational structure conceived and built upon the framework established by the Summit of Mayors initiative of which Kansas City was a founding partner; and

 

WHEREAS, the NAITCP is an international coalition of public and private entities, whose mission is the establishment of a partnership of North American communities linked by an international trade corridor through a commitment of resources and communication for sustainable economic development for the next millennium; and

 

WHEREAS, the objectives of the NAITCP include strengthening trade and business development opportunities, supporting public and private investment in infrastructure, technology and human resources to advance our common resources, supporting the implementation of cooperative marketing strategies, and encouraging economic development within the communities along the North American international trade corridor; and

 

WHEREAS, through this combined effort of the business community, academic institutions, government and economic development agencies of Canada, the United States and Mexico, our cities, states and countries will be able to move forward in a collaborative and strategic manner to increase the volume of trade and business opportunities within the corridor and thus foster economic growth within the region; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City is joined is this international initiative by several regional partners including St. Joseph, Overland Park, the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas, and Belton/Cass County, all of which enjoy a central geographic location, world-class multi-modal freight transportation infrastructure and a diverse, growing economy; NOW THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the City Council hereby expresses its intent to enter into a formal relationship with the North American International Trade Corridor Partnership; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Manager is directed to identify all available legal means to accomplish the formalization of this strategic alliance and to move as quick as possible to implement this directive.
