RESOLUTION NO. 100345
Expressing sympathy on the
death of Dr. Dorothy Irene Height.
WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri
has learned of the passing of Dr. Dorothy Irene Height on April 20, 2010 in
Washington, D.C. at Howard University Hospital; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Dorothy Irene Height was born on March 24, 1912 in Richmond, Virginia, and
as an adult, became an important Civil Rights and social activist, educator,
and administrator, and has been referred to as the “godmother” of the Civil
Rights Movement by President Barack Obama; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Dorothy Irene Height was the leading female voice of the 1960s Civil Rights
Movement and a participant in historic marches with Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr.; and
WHEREAS,
throughout her life, Dr. Dorothy Irene Height served an invaluable role in
securing African American and women’s civil rights and was involved in the
National Council for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and
Behavioral Research and numerous other national social committees and
organizations; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Dorothy Irene Height has deservingly been recognized through many awards
and honors including the Presidential Citizens Medal, inducted into the
National Women’s Hall of Fame, Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the
Congressional Gold Medal; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Dorothy Irene Height was a published author of a bestselling autobiography
entitled “Open Wide the Freedom Gates;” and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Dorothy Irene Height passed away at the age of 98 on April 20, 2010; NOW,
THEREFORE
BE
IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That
the Mayor and Council hereby remember and honor Dr. Dorothy Irene Height for
her many contributions and that the Mayor and Council take special note of her
passing; and
BE
IF FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council
in testimony thereof and a copy hereof be presented to Black Archives of
Mid-America, Inc. and the local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority, Inc. in
token of the sadness felt by the Mayor and Council on this occasion.
