RESOLUTION NO. 100086

Recognizing and expressing appreciation to Benilde Hall for providing free snow removal to Senior citizens of the 3rd District during the last couple of weeks of inclement weather.

WHEREAS, Benilde Hall located at 3220 E. 23rd Street in the 3rd District of Kansas City, Missouri, began providing transitional housing and substance abuse treatment to indigent homeless men in 1993. Since its inception, more than 1800 men have received housing and treatment. In 2001 due to the community needs, Benilde Hall more than doubled their capacity by moving into the present location that houses 50 men; and

WHEREAS, in 2006, Benilde Hall opened Matt Talbot, a 12 unit permanent housing apartment building for men who successfully completed the Benilde Hall program. The men of Matt Talbot continue with aftercare treatment while becoming mentors and role models within the Benilde Hall community; and

WHEREAS, Benilde Hall’s mission is to promote balanced and responsible independent living by preventing the relapse of chemically dependent homeless persons through housing and substance abuse treatment so they can work and live without the havoc and chaos caused by addiction and homelessness; and

WHEREAS, Benilde Hall’s outreach components include After Care Services, Outpatient and Street outreach. The outreach efforts are conducted by volunteers, staff and peers-formerly homeless addicts who are in recovery; and

WHEREAS, Benilde Hall’s vision is to extend our continuum of care to expand and enhance aftercare by increasing the service and opportunities for clients to stay engaged in care. We will facilitate a “ripple effect” of meeting the needs of more clients by keeping them engaged in care and aftercare; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and City Council hereby recognize and congratulate the leadership and staff of Benilde Hall for sustaining the organization’s mission , vision and philosophy of founder Godfrey Kobets, and the commitment to veterans and the men of the community; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Executive Director Wm. Kent Jewel, Dan Bailey and Kelly Welch with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for Benilde Hall’s outreach programs for the citizens of Kansas City, Missouri, especially the growing and successful transitional living Program.
