RESOLUTION NO. 150096

 

Declaring February 22-28, 2015, as Eating Disorder Awareness Week throughout the City of Kansas City, Missouri.

 

  WHEREAS, eating disorders are a complex medical/psychiatric illness and as high as 15% of U.S. females in their teens and 20s suffer from clinical or subclinical anorexia nervosa; and

 

  WHEREAS, anorexia nervosa ranks as the third most common clinical illness among adolescent U.S. females; and

 

WHEREAS, eating disorders affect both male and female, all socioeconomic classes and racial classifications; and

 

  WHEREAS, many eating disorders are likely to go unreported and undiagnosed eating disorder can lead to significant health complications, including mortality; and

 

  WHEREAS, prompt, intensive treatment significantly improves the chances of recovery; and

  WHEREAS, this year, the National Eating Disorder Association, with the theme “I Had No Idea”, is focusing on the importance of early intervention and recognizing the diverse experiences of people personally affected by disordered eating; and

 

WHEREAS, Eating Disorder Awareness Week provides an opportunity to raise awareness to the signs and symptoms that are often overlooked as insignificant behaviors when in fact many of these are early warning signs of eating disorders; and

 

WHEREAS, Eating Disorder Awareness Week provides an opportunity for families whose lives have been affected to celebrate life and recovery and to remember loved ones lost, to honor dedicated health professionals, and to reach out to those who are seeking resources; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare February 22-28, 2015, as Eating Disorder Awareness Week throughout the City of Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Ashley Bough, Beth Harrell, MS, RD, LD, CEDRD, and Pamela Darby-Mullins, PhD, with the Mayor and Council encouraging all citizens to increase awareness, education, and services for Eating Disorders which impact millions of people each year.
