RESOLUTION NO. 120395

 

 

Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the UMKC School of Medicine.

 

 

WHEREAS, the University of Missouri Kansas City - School of Medicine  opened in 1971 as an innovative medical education system based on an integrated baccalaureate and Medical Doctorate format; and

 

WHEREAS, the mission of the UMKC School of Medicine is to provide and foster, excellence, innovation and scholarship in education, research and medical care; and

 

WHEREAS, the vision of the UMKC School of Medicine is to be a leader in academic medicine through innovative programs and vibrant community partnership; and

 

WHEREAS, the approach used at this school is to grant admission to the majority medical school directly from high school in a curriculum spread over six or more calendar years and by providing students with early and continuous patient-care experience, the curriculum fully integrates the teaching of liberal arts/humanities, basic sciences and clinical medicine. The environment for learning created at this institution de-emphasizes competition and encourages learning through close faculty-student interaction and student partnerships; and

WHEREAS, clinical teaching affiliate institutions Truman Medical Centers, St. Luke’s Hospital, Research Medical Center, Kansas City Veterans Administration Hospital, Children’s Mercy Hospital and the Center for Behavioral Medicine,  partner with the UMKC School of Medicine and provide the over 800 faculty members that comprise the educators, docents and mentors of the school; and

WHEREAS, in 1971 the school had 18 students begin training in the medical education program and there are now more than 2900 graduates of the Medical School and over 1100 current students, residents and fellows; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the UMKC School of Medicine; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Melvin Davis, Assistant to the Dean of School of Medicine, with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for the academic excellence of the UMKC School of Medicine and its commitment to the advancement of the health of our community and acknowledge the positive economic impact that it has on our local, state and regional economy.
