RESOLUTION NO. 060477

 

Recognizing the Gates of Justice program.

 

WHEREAS, the Gates of Justice Youth Workshop is a program sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Bureau/American Jewish Committee and held at the Gem Theatre. This four-workshop program brings black teenagers and Jewish teenagers together and teaches them about the Jewish experience, the black experience, and the close connections between the two groups, historically and currently; and

 

WHEREAS, students from several schools, including Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy, Lincoln College Prep, University Academy and Wyandotte High School participated in the meaningful event. They were joined by famed jazz artist Dave Brubeck who performed a piece he wrote entitled The Gates of Justice, which he wrote after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.; and

 

WHEREAS, students who participated include Roni Erin Katz, Dana Ford, Nicole France, Rashay Green, Nyla Handy, Henriette Jenssen, Talia Kincaid, Mykala Sanders, Boris Abramov, Andrew Azorsky, Ashur Bratt, Scott Bratt, Gina Cohn, Zach Feldman, Molly Frank, Shella Friedman, Zach Heisler, Micah Margolies, Jordan Marks, Ben Oberman, Joey Robinow, Jessica Rose, Alexa Rosenberg, Naftali Rosenthal, Richie Schlozman, Bonnie Seaman, Abby Sechrist, Ori Solomon, Michael Yodler, Jacob White, Isaac Wilder, Daniel Siegel, Jason Sanders, Jared Gilbert, Fred Collier, Elizabeth Smith, Darrel Taylor, Jamie Blair, Jarrett S. Brooks, Kiana Byers, Brittany Caldwell, Gary Caldwell, DeShauna Cole, Akeem Cums, Johnny Hall, Eric Harden, James Harden, Justin Henderson, Toryana Jennings, Joanthony Johnson, Kim Huong Lee, Derel Lovelace, Brandon McNeal, Travis Milsap, Shaka Myrick, Elan Nachum, Jaleeza Owens, Jacob Powell, Darren Ricketts, Vonzell Robertson, Chris Robinson, Abdurahman Sharif, Gregory Wright, and Naandi Wright. The students were joined by a number of volunteers and facilitators, including Betsy Khalili and Judy Hellman; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council support the Gates of Justice Workshop program and similar programs designed to bring people together; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread among the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to Betsy Khalili and the participants in this remarkable program.
