RESOLUTION NO. 181003

 

Pledging appreciation for Sonia Warshawski for her continued efforts and dedication to bringing unity to the community and declaring December 21, 2018, as “Big Sonia Day.”

 

WHEREAS, Sonia Warshawski is an honored and productive citizen of the greater Kansas City metropolitan area. Sonia Warshawski’s multi-award winning documentary film “Big Sonia” was awarded one of the 10 Best Documentaries in 2018 and went from a two week showing to 6 months at the Glenwood Theater. The film highlights her efforts to inform the world about the Holocaust and her message of tolerance and love. “Big Sonia” has been included with Schindler’s List as one of the top Holocaust movies to educate people; and

 

WHEREAS, since December 2017, “Big Sonia” has been recorded on DVD, iTunes and Amazon and has the unique ability to deeply affect a broad cross-section of our citizenry with her story. Holocaust education this year has been accepted in many middle and high schools. She has made two speaking appearances and a showing of “Big Sonia” at the U.S. Capital for Congress, spoke to numerous veterans through Senator Elizabeth Dole’s “Hidden Heroes” initiative, visited many incarcerated men and women, the business community, members of every faith, and first and second generation immigrants to spread her message of “Love over Hate;” and

 

WHEREAS, Sonia Warshawski has operated John’s Tailor Shop providing both tailoring services and a haven for customers young and old to share their stories and seek advice; and

 

WHEREAS, Sonia Warshawski is a strong role model for people of every age and has devoted countless hours away from her friends, her business and her family to honor the memory of her forebears and become a voice for tolerance and love. For your constant efforts to make Kansas City and the world a better place, we say, thank you; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby acknowledge the importance of recognizing Sonia Warshawski and her efforts in education about the Holocaust and declare December 21, 2018, as “Big Sonia Day”; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Sonia Warshawski in token of the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for her many years engaging in small acts of kindness that have had a BIG impact in service to our City, and of their best wishes for all the years to come.
