RESOLUTION NO. 090119

 

Honoring Jullaion Jones on his courageous actions on January 30, 2009.

 

WHEREAS, on January 30, 2009, a basketball game held at the Tony Aguirre Community Center between DeLaSalle Education Center and Southeast Community Center was interrupted by men entering the gym with guns. A fight ensued and shots rang out which stopped the game and caused the audience to scatter; and

 

WHEREAS, Jullaion Jones grabbed six year old Desean Merritt, son of DeLaSalle vice-principal Sean Merritt, and held him in his arms to shield him from the bullets; and

 

WHEREAS, when the shooters left leaving four bystanders wounded with Jullaion Jones having been grazed by a bullet, but Desean was not injured!; and

 

WHEREAS, Jullaion Jones is a 19 year-old avid athlete and is a hero in the eyes of his school, fellow students, friends and most of all Sean and Desean Merritt; and

 

WHEREAS, Jullaion Jones is praised as an example of great kids that come out of DeLaSalle and considered a blessing because of his quick thinking and disregard for his own safety during a dangerous encounter; and

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Jullaion Jones on his courageous actions on January 30, 2009; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Jullaion Jones in token of the highest esteem with which he is held by the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for his quick thinking and courage in saving the life of a child.
