RESOLUTION NO. 120693

 

Declaring July 26, 2012, as Americans With Disabilities Act Awareness Day.

 

WHEREAS, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed on July 26, 1990 to ensure the civil rights of citizens with disabilities; and

 

WHEREAS, twenty-two years later individuals living with disabilities and their allies continue to work to affirm the principals of equality and inclusion; and

 

WHEREAS, the Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities is comprised of fifteen talented and capable individuals who serve as the resource for the Council and Mayor; and

 

WHEREAS, the Department of Justice and the City of Kansas City, Missouri are signing a settlement as part of Project Civic Access to ensure that everyone can work in, utilize and enjoy our facilities equally; and

 

WHEREAS, the Mayor’s Committee is committed to work diligently and with a spirit of cooperation to ensure the successful completion of this agreement and in addition accomplish its mission to work proactively to remove physical and attitudinal barriers at all levels of City government and throughout Kansas City, Missouri by ensuring that the City is inclusive of, and is fully usable by, people with disabilities; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council declare July 26, 2012, as Americans With Disabilities Act Awareness Day; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to David Westbrook with the Mayor and Council expressing support for the dedication and efforts of the Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities.
