RESOLUTION NO. 140875

Declaring October 2014 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

WHEREAS, domestic violence is a serious crime that affects people of every race, age, gender, and income level; and

WHEREAS, domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness among families in the U.S.; and

WHEREAS, though children react to exposure to violence in different ways, many show remarkable resilience, and studies suggest that as assets in a child’s environment increase, including protective adults, the problems he or she experiences may actually decrease; and

WHEREAS, many victims remain in an abusive relationship because they believe that the violence is their fault, then family, friends, and society may deepen this belief by accusing the victim of provoking the violence and casting blame on the victim; however, no one, except for the perpetrator is responsible for and can end the violence; and

WHEREAS, domestic violence costs the nation billions of dollars annually in medical expenses, police and court costs, shelters, foster care, sick leave, absenteeism, and non-productivity; and

WHEREAS, silence is the greatest strength of Domestic Violence, but shining a light on Domestic Violence can bring hope, and by taking a stand and working together as a community, we can find an end to the devastation of the violence in our most sacred place, our homes; and

WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month provides an excellent opportunity for citizens to learn more about preventing domestic violence and to show support for the numerous organizations and individuals who provide critical advocacy, services and assistance to victims; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare October 2014 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Kansas City, Missouri Prosecutor’s Office, Domestic Violence Victim Assistance Program with the Mayor and Council urging all citizens to work together to eliminate domestic violence from our community.
