RESOLUTION NO. 180992

 

Honoring Mark L. McHenry on the occasion of his retirement after more than 44 years of dedicated service to the City of Kansas City, Missouri.

 

WHEREAS, Mr. McHenry is one of the longest serving City employees on record having worked for the same department, Parks and Recreation Department over his entire career and serving in a leadership capacity for over 30 years, 15 years as Deputy Director and 15 years as Director; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. McHenry is a nationally recognized industry leader and has worked tirelessly to provide the citizens of Kansas City, Missouri with an outstanding parks, recreation and boulevard system; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. McHenry helped add 34 parks, six community centers, 1,000 acres of parkland, numerous, playgrounds, shelters, ball diamonds, aquatic facilities, fountains, monuments, sculptures, soccer field and 120 miles of trails and also helped establish over 100+ public/private partnerships; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. McHenry lead the effort in 2012 to gain citizen support of a one half cent sales tax for Parks and Recreation that provided long term financial support for the department and helped insure that the department remain accredited by the National Recreation and Parks Association and in 2016, led the effort to have the Kansas City Parks and Boulevards Historic District placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service Department of Interior; and

WHEREAS, December 31, 2018, will mark the last day of Mr. McHenry’s career with the City of Kansas City, Missouri; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby extend to Mr. McHenry, on the occasion of his retirement from public service, the heartiest best wishes for his future, together with appreciation for over 44 years of dedicated and devoted service to the citizens of this great City of Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the  Council in  testimony thereof and that a  copy hereof  be presented to Mark L. McHenry as a token of the Mayor and Council’s respect, high regard, and for the long and happy retirement which he so richly deserves.
