RESOLUTION NO. 060227

 

Declaring 2006 as Sister Cities 50th Anniversary year and saluting Kansas Citys Sister Cities program.

 

WHEREAS, Sister Cities International was established in 1956 at the behest of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Today, the citizen diplomacy network is active in 2300 communities and 130 countries; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City, Missouri established its first Sister City relationship in 1967 with Seville, Spain. The tapestry that hangs in the Council Chambers on the 26th floor of City Hall is a gift from Seville to Kansas City, and serves to symbolize the friendship and connection between the two cities, historically as well as presently; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City has thirteen Sister Cities in eleven countries: Seville, Spain; Kurashiki, Japan; Morelia, Mexico; Freetown, Sierra Leone; Tainan, Taiwan; Xian, China; Guadalajara, Mexico; Hannover, Germany; Port Harcourt, Nigeria; Arusha, Tanzania; San Nicolas de los Garza, Mexico; Ramla, Israel and Metz, France; and

 

WHEREAS, the mission of Sister Cities International and the member communities is to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding and cooperation among the people of the world. Today, the relationships between and among communities correspond to a host of issues, including trade, education, arts and culture, humanitarian outreach and other issues of common interest; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas Citys yearlong celebration of this milestone will have 50 highlights for the 50th Anniversary including Citizen Diplomacy Summit, a ceremony for the Sister Cities Bridge on the Country Club Plaza, and an anniversary dinner. In addition, each member of the City Council will be affiliated with a particular sister city and will be part of the special activities planned throughout the year; and

 

WHEREAS, the fiftieth anniversary of Sister Cities International will be celebrated at the Sister Cities International 50th Anniversary Conference to be held in Washington, DC in July 2006. Mayor Kay Barnes will lead the Kansas City delegation; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council declare 2006 as Sister Cities 50th Anniversary and salute Kansas Citys Sister Cities program; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the council in testimony thereof and a copy hereof be presented to the individuals who preside over Kansas Citys thirteen Sister City committees.
