RESOLUTION NO. 990022
Honoring
George Brett on the occasion of his election to the Baseball Hall of Fame on
January 5, 1999 by 98.19% of the vote, one of the biggest margins in history.
WHEREAS,
George Brett, legendary Royals superstar for 21 years, was elected to the
Baseball Hall of Fame on January 5 by 98.19% of the vote, and will be inducted
July 25 in Cooperstown, N.Y.; and
WHEREAS,
Brett, with his .305 career batting average, 3,154 hits, 3 batting titles, 317
home runs, 1 MVP selection and 13 all star selections, will always have a
special place in major league baseball as well as in Kansas City, where his
name is synonymous with the Royals; and
WHEREAS,
George was a hard-working, competitive player, who led the Royals to 6 division
titles, 2 American Leagues pennants and the World Series title in 1985; and
WHEREAS.
George continues today to give back to baseball and to the community with his
selfless work as longtime supporter for the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Association, Keith Worthington Chapter, raising millions over the last 20 years
to fight the tragic Lou Gehrigs disease; and
WHEREAS,
the Mayor and Council and the citizens of Kansas City have been blessed by the
presence and contributions of this brilliant player and are delighted upon the
occasion of his historic election to the Hall of Fame; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE
IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That
the Mayor and Council hereby honor George Brett upon his election to the
Baseball Hall of Fame and hereby heartily congratulate him as the first Royal
in the Hall of Fame and upon his landslide victory in the first year of his
eligibility; and
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the
Council in testimony of the heartfelt gratitude of the Mayor, Council and
citizens of this City to George Brett and his wife Leslie and his family for
giving Kansas City irreplaceable memories of baseball glory throughout his 21
years as a Kansas City Royal.
