RESOLUTION NO. 190144

Honoring former UMKC men’s basketball student-athlete, Michael Watson, on his accomplishments with the UMKC Roos during his basketball career spanning from 2000-2004 and as such, the official retirement of his #22 UMKC Roos jersey.

WHEREAS, Michael Watson’s basketball career spanned over four seasons (2000-2004), wherein he scored 2,488 points, becoming the all-time leading scorer in UMKC history; and

WHEREAS, Watson broke the UMKC scoring record held by former Roos legend, Tony Dumas, whom went on to play four seasons in the NBA in the mid-1990s for the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns; and

WHEREAS, with the assistance of his teammates and Watson’s impressive scoring force, UMKC lead one of its most successful seasons in history in 2001-2002, which resulted in the UMKC Roos receiving votes in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll for the first-time in school history and finishing with an 18-11 overall record; and

WHEREAS, in 2004, Watson was named a first-team All Mid-Continent Conference selection for the third year in a row, which is the most of any player in Roos history, in which he joined Dumas as the only Roos players to be recognized on the NABC All-District Second Team; and

WHEREAS, Watson is the school career frontrunner in three-pointers made with 391 and is ranked 13th in NCAA history;

WHEREAS, Watson carries the record for most points scored in a single game (54) against Oral Roberts University, in which he drilled 10 three-pointers, earning the best single-game mark; and

WHEREAS, Michael Watson’s #22 UMKC Roos jersey will be honored during and on-court ceremony, scheduled for Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Swinney Center; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby extend to Michael Watson, on the occasion of retirement of his #22 UMKC Roos jersey and success of his impressive basketball career with the team, best wishes for his future, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution is spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Michael Watson in token of the Mayor and Council’s respect and high regard, and their best wishes for continued success.
