RESOLUTION NO. 090673

 

Declaring Sunday, August 9, 2009, as Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Day.

 

WHEREAS, on Sunday, August 9, 2009, starting at the Union Station in Downtown Kansas City participants will either do a 5K run/walk starting at Grand Boulevard or a 1 mile walk starting at Main Street for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure of breast cancer; and

 

WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen died of breast cancer and her sister promised to do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1982, that promise became the worlds largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures; and

 

WHEREAS, through affiliate networks, corporate partners, generous donors and events like the Race for the Cure, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill the promise and has become the largest source of non-profit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world; and

 

WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women and every woman is at risk for breast cancer. One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime and the number of women getting breast cancer is increasing, with the greatest increase occurring in younger women; and

 

WHEREAS, early detection of breast cancer through breast self-examination or annual screening mammography increases chances for survival; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY;

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare Sunday, August 9, 2009, as Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Day; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be given to Susan G. Komen Kansas City Affiliates with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and the citizens of Kansas City for their efforts in the fight against breast cancer.
