RESOLUTION NO. 100335
Declaring
April, 2010, as Fair Housing Month in Kansas City, Missouri.
WHEREAS, the
month of April, 2010, marks the 42nd anniversary of the signing of the National
Fair Housing Act, Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, providing that it
shall be unlawful to discriminate against any person in terms, conditions, or
privileges of the sale or rental of a dwelling or in the provision of services
or facilities in connection therewith because of race, color, religion, sex,
national origin, disability or familial status; and
WHEREAS, the City in its efforts to combat housing discrimination
provides general funding and receives Fair Housing Assistance Program grant
funds through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide
enforcement, outreach, and education activities to prevent housing
discrimination; and
WHEREAS, the City has a fair housing ordinance that is substantially
equivalent to the Federal Fair Housing Act and the Human Relations Department,
Civil Rights Division has a cooperative agreement with the U .S. Department of
Housing and Urban Development, Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity;
and
WHEREAS, the denial of equal housing opportunity is one of the most
serious challenges a community can face, a challenge that must be met and
surmounted lest it erode the vital social structure that holds a community
together and gives it shape and dimension; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED
BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council do
hereby declare the month of April, 2010, as Fair Housing Month in Kansas City,
Missouri; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of
the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Myrtle
Wilson, Director, Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, HUD, Region
VII, and Phillip Yelder, Director, Human Relations, with the Mayor and Council
urging all citizens to join in this observance by resolving to fight
discrimination and prejudice in their own daily lives and by making themselves
more aware of the Fair Housing Act and the ways in which it applies to our
community and by specially recognizing this 42nd anniversary of the Federal
Fair Housing Act.
