Congratulating the American Royal Barbecue on its
Eleventh Anniversary in Kansas City -- The Barbecue Capital of the World.

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri, is
justly known for having the best barbecue in the world; and
WHEREAS, the supremacy of Kansas City's style of
barbecue was officially reconfirmed this year when Team Kansas City won the
World Barbecue Championship in Lisdoonvarna, Ireland for the second year in a
row; and
WHEREAS, the American Royal Barbecue -- this year
starting tomorrow, October 5th through October 7th -- attracts hundreds of
contestants from throughout the United States as well as foreign countries; and
WHEREAS, this premier barbecue event attracts
thousands of people to Kansas City to sample our Midwestern hospitality as well
as the world's best barbecue; and
WHEREAS, every year Kansas City receives favorable
publicity around the country through the articles on our outstanding barbecue
written by the scores of food editors and writers who attend the event; and
WHEREAS, the American Royal Barbecue this year
features five different contests:
The Seventh Annual American Royal International
Barbecue Sauce Contest (formerly known as the Diddy-Wa-Diddy National
Barbecue Sauce Contest) which is the only international barbecue sauce
contest in the United States. This competition, founded by Tastemaster
Remus Powers, Ph.B. (Philosopher of Barbecue), also known as Ardie A.
Davis, benefits both the American Royal and the Kansas City Chapter
of the Dream Factory, an organization dedicated to fulfilling the dreams
of chronically and terminally ill children;
The American Royal/Masterpiece National Invitational
Barbecue Contest featuring the champions of state and major regional
barbecue contests throughout the country;
The American Royal Barbecue Contest which this year
has attracted 183 top barbecuing teams from all over the Midwest;
The 2nd Annual Armour Classic Barbecue Contest,
hosted by Armour Foods, which features competition barbecuing
precooked meats;
The First National Coors Buffalo Wing Contest
judging barbecued spicy chicken wings; and
WHEREAS, these contests and accompanying
entertainment events add up to a weekend dedicated to barbecue and fun, all
for the benefit of the American Royal; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the City of Kansas City, Missouri, offers its
congratulations to the American Royal Barbecue on the occasion of its eleventh
anniversary and urges all of its citizens and the public at large to join in
this year's festivities.
