RESOLUTION NO. 130885

 

Declaring November 10, 2013, as Worldwide NET Cancer Awareness Day.

WHEREAS, Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) is the umbrella term for a group of unusual, often slow-growing cancers which develop from cells in the diffuse endocrine system; and

 

WHEREAS, NET cancer is difficult to diagnose therefore patients are often misdiagnosed or receive a delayed diagnosis which can have a negative impact on their chance of survival and quality of life; and

 

WHEREAS, the number of diagnosed NET patients is growing with over 110,000 recognized cases in the United States and between 11,000 to 12,000 more diagnosed annually; and

 

WHEREAS, information is key to improving quality of life and prognosis for NET cancer patients therefore raising awareness is important in this fight against this disease; and

 

WHEREAS, with timely diagnosis and proper treatment, NET cancer patients can have significantly improved outcomes and quality of life; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare November 10, 2013, as Worldwide NET Cancer Awareness Day; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Amy Dahlstrom and Faith Schneider with the Mayor and Council encouraging patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, as well as the wider community, to join with them in working together to raise awareness about NET cancersa and the need for timely diagnosis and access to optimal treatment and care.
