RESOLUTION NO. 060776

 

Recognizing Newhouse on the occasion of the organizations 35th anniversary of providing service to this community and specifically the urban core and Kansas Citys Old Northeast area.

 

WHEREAS, Newhouse was Kansas Citys first shelter for battered women and their children; and

 

WHEREAS, Newhouse provides more than 17,000 nights free from violence to more than 650 women and their children each year; and

 

WHEREAS, Newhouse, in addition to safe shelter, provides a variety of services, including domestic violence education, substance abuse therapy, mental health therapy, court advocacy, employment and education services; and

 

WHEREAS, children are an important part of the programs provided at Newhouse and are afforded the care and services deemed essential to their well-being; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate Newhouse, its Board of Directors, staff and stakeholders, for their dedication and 35 years of commitment to and advocacy for women in this community and their children, for continuing efforts to end domestic violence in this community and for improving the quality of life provided to those seeking safe shelter; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Newhouse Board of Directors and Staff, with the best wishes of the Mayor and Council that these contributions continue until the issue of violence in our community is resolved.
