RESOLUTION NO. 061241

 

Honoring Veterans Day on November 11, 2006.

 

WHEREAS, in 1918, The Great War World War I ends with an armistice between the Allies and Germany at the 11th hour, 11th day and the 11th month; and

 

WHEREAS, President Wilson proclaims the First Armistice Day in 1919 with a suspension of business for a two-minute period beginning at 11:00 a.m., with the day also marked by parades and public gatherings; and

 

WHEREAS, Congress passes legislation approving the establishment of a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery and November 11 is chosen for the date of the ceremony and Congress declares on November 11, 1921, a federal holiday honoring all those who participated in the war; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1926, Congress adopts a resolution requesting the president issue a proclamation calling on the display of the flag on all government buildings on November 11th as well observing the day in schools, churches or other suitable places with appropriate ceremonies; and

 

WHEREAS, on May 13, 1938, Congress passed legislation declaring November 11th as a legal holiday and calling it Armistice Day; and

 

WHEREAS, President Eisenhower signs legislation changing the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day because of World War II and the Korean War which created millions of new veterans in addition to those in the Great War; NOW, THEREFORE,


BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Veterans Day on November 11, 2006; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Brigadier General Stephen R. Berkheiser USMC (Retired) representing the Liberty Memorial Association for proclamation at this years Veterans Day Ceremony at the Liberty Memorial with the urging of the Mayor and Council to all citizens of Kansas City to hang their flags and observe a two-minute moment of silence for all the veterans in our community.
