RESOLUTION NO. 070211

Commending the City Market of Kansas City on its One Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary and affirming the Councils intent to support events surrounding the citywide celebration of the Anniversary in 2007.

WHEREAS, the Markets location has been a public square since originally platted in 1846, becoming the center of the Citys commerce thereafter, from trappers, traders and sellers of the early days to the farmers of today; and

WHEREAS, the Council by ordinance in 1846 authorized construction of a market building in the public square, which has operated continuously as the City Market for one hundred fifty years; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the City Market is to provide a venue for a City-wide Farmers Market, for the purposes of promoting local and regional agriculture, business enterprise and to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for the community; and

WHEREAS, the City Market is the largest farmers market in the state of Missouri and a top area attraction with an attendance of over 590,000 annually; and

WHEREAS, the City Market is located at 20 East 5th Street, in the heart of the historic River Market neighborhood; and

WHEREAS, the City Market will celebrate its One Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary Season with a kickoff in May of 2007, and continue to mark the occasion with a season-long celebration of history and agriculture through October of 2007; and

WHEREAS, the Council deems support of this event to be a worthy expenditure of City funds, to be expressed as a challenge grant to the City Market in the amount of $50,000.00; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

Section 1. That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize and commemorate the One Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary of the City Market.

Section 2. That the Council hereby affirms its intent to provide $50,000.00 in funding as a grant in support of the 150th anniversary events.

Section 3. That the City Manager is authorized and directed to do whatever, in his discretion, is reasonably necessary to implement the terms and spirit of this resolution.
