RESOLUTION NO. 970155

 

Urging the Project Coordinating Committee of the Science City at Union Station Project to open its meetings to the public.

 

WHEREAS, the Science City at Union Station Project will be funded with $118 million in sales tax revenues; and

 

WHEREAS, prior to the approval of the bistate sales tax, the Project Coordinating Committee had been meeting out of public view, and now intends to continue its closed-meeting policy; and

 

WHEREAS, the Bistate Culture Commission, will oversee expenditures of the bistate sales tax and has stated that it will adhere to the Open Meetings and Records Law; and

 

WHEREAS, members of the Bistate Culture Commission have not yet approved the closed-meeting policy of the Project Coordinating Committee and are pushing for the Coordinating Committee's meeting to be held in public; and

 

WHEREAS, the Council strongly believes that the process in making decisions to spend public funds should be open to the public in accordance with the Open Meetings and Records Law and that an open meeting policy is essential to creating and maintaining public trust and accountability, and that conducting open meetings will promote area wide cooperation; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council strongly urge the Project Coordinating Committee of the Science City at Union Station Project open its meetings to the public in accordance with the Missouri Open Meetings and Records Law in order to build and maintain public confidence and accountability in the spending of taxpayer dollars.
