RESOLUTION NO. 951445

Celebrating the AXA World Ride.

WHEREAS, the AXA World Ride is an around-the-world bike trek currently in progress. Seven disabled cyclists are riding around the world to create public awareness of the abilities of people with disabilities; and

WHEREAS, the riders will begin their U.S. tour on October 1 in Los Angeles and will arrive in Kansas City on October 24. Two events to celebrate the spirit of what these athletes are trying to accomplish are scheduled: The Ride-In to be held on October 24 and The Business Cycle to be held on October 25; and

WHEREAS, an around-the-world bicycle trip has been attempted only 10 times before--and never in this way. The athletes will travel 13,000 miles, through 16 countries during an eight month period. They are putting their lives on hold with one simple goal in mind--to educate the world; to change the way the public thinks about people with disabilities. As one paraplegic rider says: "this isn't about everything I've lost, this is about all the things I still can do"; and

WHEREAS, AXA, the event title sponsor is the second largest insurance company in France and fourth largest in the world. Equitable, AXA's international business partner, is the sponsor of the two events in Kansas City; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby commend the AXA World Ride and the seven cyclists with disabilities for their efforts to educate the public about the abilities of individuals with disabilities; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to Bill Degman, Pat Patton and Jim Selzer in appreciation for their efforts to promote and develop opportunities for persons with physical and/or mental disabilities and to participate in lifetime sports activities.
