RESOLUTION NO. 180769

 

In memory of Dr. Charles J. Briscoe who passed away on Tuesday, September 25, 2018.

WHEREAS, Dr. Charles J. Briscoe was born on June 16, 1931, attended school in Kansas City, Missouri, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Grace University in Omaha, Nebraska, did graduate work at Central Baptist Theological Seminary, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and the Nazarene Theological Seminar, and then earned a Bachelor of Divinity Degree from the Missouri School of Religion and was also awarded an honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Briscoe pastored churches in Brunswick and Moberly, Missouri before becoming the pastor of Paseo Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri in May, 1967; and

 

WHEREAS, as pastor at Paseo Baptist Church, Dr. Briscoe established a number of ministries including Children’s Church, Wednesday Morning Prayer Group, Bus Ministry, Single’s Ministry, Services to Elderly People (S.T.E.P.S), School of Christian Discipleship, Tape and Sound Ministry (now TTT), Koinonia Group, Counseling Ministry, Day Care Ministry (now Erma L. Williams Learning Center), Young Men’s Mentoring Ministry, Hearing Impaired Ministry (H.I.M.), BLB Productions Drama Ministry, Women’s Ministry, and Men’s Ministry; and

 

WHEREAS, under Dr. Briscoe’s leadership outreach ministries have included sponsoring 3 missionaries to foreign fields, sponsoring Ethiopian refugees, Vacation Bible School in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Nassau, Bahamas and Belzoni, Mississippi; Women’s and Men’s Retreats and an annual fellowship with First Baptist Church of Shawnee, Kansas and Most recently, he established the Charles J. Briscoe Foundation with his wife, Barbara Pope Briscoe; and

 

WHEREAS; there were a number of upgrades and improvements to the church under Dr. Briscoe which included carpeting, new pews, lights and kitchen equipment. Also under his leadership, the church added a South wing dedicated to Education and Administration in 2000; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby express their profound sorrow on the death of Dr. Charles J. Briscoe; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the family of Dr. Charles J. Briscoe in the token of the genuine esteem and respect in which he was held and in token of the since sympathy hereby extended to his family.
